Marble FallsPoints of Interest

Hills of Home Memorial: This historical marker commemorates Oscar J. Fox, famous composer of western tunes such as "Home on the Range", and "Get Along Little Doggie". It is located on US 281 on the hillside south of the Colorado River, now overlooking Lake Marble Falls. This is the view which inspired Fox to write his beautiful song, "The Hills of Home".

Granite Mountain: The historical marker (a granite monolith) is located on RR 1431 on the western edge of town and commemorates the 866 foot dome of solid pink granite. The formation covers 180 acres and contains the largest quarry of its kind in the United States. A special railroad line was built to haul the granite to Austin when the rock was used to build the state Capitol. The tracks and active quarry activities can be seen from the roadside park on RR 1431.

Michel's Drug Store: 216 Main Street. The marker commemorates the state's longest serving drug store. The Michel family still owns and operates the store, which offers everything from old fashioned sodas to clothing, gift items and perfume. The store was first established in 1891 at its present location and quickly became the gathering place for the citizens of Marble Falls. When a fire destroyed the original building in 1905, a three story structure was rebuilt in its place, with the drugstore on the first floor, an opera house seating 300 on the second, and the family living quarters on the third. This structure burned again in 1927, and was replaced by the present building.

Governor O.M. Roberts House: 819 Seventh Street. Governor Roberts was president of the 1861 secession convention and a confederate officer. He served as governor of Texas from 1879 to 1883, and was later a professor of law at the University of Texas. Roberts settled in this house at Third and Main Street after his retirement in 1893. The structure was later moved to it present location. (Now a private residence).

Marble Falls Depot: 801 US 281. Texas Mining and Improvement Company deeded land on Avenue N in Marble Falls for a depot to the Austin and Northwestern Railroad. A building was erected on the site in 1893 and was later purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The depot was closed in 1968 and was not used until purchased by a local businessman who donated the structure to the Chamber of Commerce and the City. The old depot was then moved to the present location, restored and now serves as the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber offices.

Otto Ebling House: 601 Avenue F. Banker Otto Ebling built this Victorian residence for his wife Emilie Giesecke and their four children shortly after moving to Marble Falls. The structure has served as a nursing home, a photography studio and a private residence. (Now a private Residence).

Christian-Matern House: 603 7th Street. Juliet Johnson Christian, daughter of the founder of Marble Falls, and her husband had this home built in 1892. Ivo B. & Mina Matern bought the house in 1908 and owned it for 51 years. Mr. Matern served as Mayor of Marble Falls in 1937. A fine Victorian house, it exhibits Queen Anne style influences including decorative woodwork and bay windows. (Now a private residence).
